This stunning rainbow ring was captured at Gardens by the Bay at midday today!
The optical phenomenon is known as a sun halo or 22 degree-halo because the ring has a radius of approximately 22 degrees around the sun. It typically occurs when there are thin clouds so high in the sky that they are made of ice crystals rather than water droplets. The ice crystals have to be oriented just right so that light is refracted into a halo around the sun. It is a neat match for my annular eclipse shot last December (go.gov.sg/otybez).
